Engineering spotlight

At FM Global, our 1,800+ engineers don't spend their days behind the desk. They are out in the field, working at the world's largest industrial facilities to help prevent losses from natural and man-made hazards, and help clients make informed decisions on how best to protect their facilities against identified risks.

Our engineers are both seasoned professionals and recent graduates. 25% of UK employees are field engineers and we invest more than £150,000 training each one. All field engineers follow a structured training programme in their first eighteen months which includes three practical courses at our training facilities in the US: mentoring, self-study and e-based training. Once this is completed, the engineers work more independently but there are many opportunities for further training and development, including opportunities to specialise in a particular field such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, civil, and industrial engineering and fire protection.

What is a field engineer?

As a field engineer, you'll be out in the world, dealing with real people and real situations. You may find yourself evaluating a structure to ensure that it can withstand hurricane-force winds. Or, you may work to assess systems that will need to survive the world's worst earthquakes. It's a hands-on job requiring high energy, self-motivation and creativity. Your experience at FM Global starts with extensive training in loss-prevention engineering from some of the most talented and respected engineers in the world. You will soon find yourself working independently from your home office, traveling to client facilities to solve complicated technical issues, and meeting with local management of the world's best-known companies.

You will be entrusted to evaluate multimillion dollar facilities, sometimes around the world, and make decisions that involve complex business processes every day.

It's not just a job – it’s a career

FM Global takes pride in developing careers for our engineers, and we offer an array of career options for people with engineering backgrounds, including account engineering and account management, loss adjustment, research, standards, approvals, underwriting, direct sales and training. In fact, a number of our top executives at FM Global began their careers in our world-class engineering department.
